Modern potato variety breeding

Every year, we sow tens of thousands of seeds, selecting the best plants according to a precise breeding program.

Creative Breeding

Genetically proven varieties,
stable production and responsible breeding
– this is the foundation of our offer.

Developing a new potato variety is a process that can take up to 10 years and is carried out in accordance with a breeding program.

The main evaluation criteria are: earliness, yield, tuber morphology, starch content, taste, suitability for processing, and resistance to viruses, potato blight, and other fungal and bacterial diseases.

All breeding lines submitted for registration trials are resistant to potato wart disease and potato cyst nematodes.

The main evaluation criteria are: earliness, yield, tuber morphology, starch content, palatability, suitability for processing, and resistance to viruses, potato blight, and other fungal and bacterial diseases. All breeding lines submitted to registration trials are resistant to potato wart disease and potato cyst nematodes.

After seven years of selection, based on the results of internal and preliminary trials, the selected breeding lines (approximately 10) are submitted for registration trials conducted by COBORU. After two years, based on the results and the opinion of the Registration Commission, the Director of COBORU decides on the entry of the variety into the National Variety Register. The inclusion of a variety in the Polish Register, in accordance with EU law, results in its automatic registration at the European Union level. The breeder decides on variety protection, choosing either EU or national coverage. Obtaining exclusive rights to a variety enables the collection of license fees from seed plantations and farm-saved seed (FSS).

Conservation breeding and seed production

Conservation breeding and potato seed production are carried out in four company branches, all located in areas with the lowest risk of viral pressure. Currently, our offer includes 29 varieties: 15 table varieties and 14 starch varieties.

The starting material for conservation breeding of varieties entered in the National Register consists of minitubers obtained from plants and microtubers propagated in the company’s own tissue culture laboratories.

Healthy material for the laboratories is sourced from the Gene Bank in Bonin. The minitubers produced in greenhouses and tunnels are planted in the following year in the field across the company’s four branches as pre-basic material for seed production.

All varieties in conservation breeding are multiplied on a large scale in a 2–3-year cycle. During the growing season, negative selection is carried out, along with protection against aphids and potato blight (depending on needs). Throughout the season, the health status of conservation breeding materials and seed plantations is tested using the ELISA method.

The implementation of this technology enables the production of seed potatoes with a high level of health quality in a shortened cycle. The scale of production for individual varieties is regulated by the demand for certified seed potatoes.
